The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there–on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. Before I express my opinion of it, I might as well reveal its plot. In the end, I found myself viewing the 1985 television movie, due to it being part of a box set of Jane Marple movies. When I first learned about the 1985 adaptation of the film, I did not bother to get my hands on a video or DVD copy. In fact, I have difficulty in viewing it as mediocre. I do not regard it as one of the author's more remarkable works. I am not a fan of Agatha Christie's 1942 novel, "The Moving Finger". I might as well put my cards on the table. ![]() ![]() The Soviet people must prepare themselves for a replay of the 1930s by developing basic industry instead of consumer goods and, in all, making enormous sacrifices demanded in ‘three five- year plans, I should think if not more.’ There would be no peace, internally or externally. “In an election speech of February 9, the Soviet dictator announced that Marxist-Leninist dogma remained valid, for ‘the unevenness of development of the capitalist countries’ could lead to ‘violent disturbance’ and the consequent splitting of the ‘capitalist world into two camps and the war between them.’ War was inevitable as long as capitalism existed. ![]() ![]() ![]() Cold War historian Walter LaFeber discussed how Stalin’s speech cast a pall over contemporary East-West negotiations, In February of that year, Stalin’s Soviet Party Congress speech made the growing East-West conflict seem inevitable. Such declarations of Cold War began as early as 1946. At the heart of their message was recognition of the posturing by the two superpowers with opposing ideologies and world views. Tensions between the two countries escalated during the post-World War II period and declarations by leaders on both sides, including Stalin and Churchill, and strategists, such as United States diplomat George Kennan, began to formally announce the existence of a Cold War. ![]() ![]() ![]() It sounds like a perfect summer read, light and fluffy with a good dose of drama and a lot of romance. I love the idea of a romance between two students, and the fact that Jaewoo is a member of a K-pop band. It intrigued me, since Fairyloot usually matches up to my reading tastes quite well, and so I decided to check out the synopsis. Why do I want to read it? I first heard about this book a few months back, when Fairyloot were doing signed pre-orders for the novel. When a relationship means throwing Jenny’s life off the path she’s spent years mapping out, she’ll have to decide once and for all just how much she’s willing to risk for love. He’s a member of one of the biggest K-pop bands in the world-and he’s strictly forbidden from dating. Three months later, when Jenny and her mother arrive in South Korea to take care of her ailing grandmother, she’s shocked to discover that Jaewoo is a student at the same elite arts academy where she’s enrolled for the semester. But in a moment of spontaneity, she allows him to pull her out of her comfort zone for one unforgettable night of adventure…before he disappears without a word. When she meets mysterious, handsome Jaewoo in her uncle’s Los Angeles karaoke bar, it’s clear he’s the kind of boy who would uproot her careful plans. ![]() ![]() ![]() What is it about: Cello prodigy Jenny has one goal: to get into a prestigious music conservatory. ![]() ![]() ![]() However, trust in the mainstream media is at an all-time low, with a majority of citizens across the political spectrum believing it publishes a lot of fake news. Traditionally, mainstream media had the role of separating the wheat of truth from the chaff of deception. No wonder that a study showed that most Americans who see fake news believe it. Extensive research in psychology shows that our minds tend to search for and interpret information in ways that align with our previous beliefs, a phenomenon known as “confirmation bias.” In other words, we’ll tend to believe whoever tells us what we want to hear, whether or not what they’re saying is true. Let’s get the myths out of the way: we can’t trust our gut on who is telling the truth. How can we tell apart the ones who spout bald-faced lies from those who actually tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? Fortunately, we now have a science-based tool for telling which politicians are comfortable committing to the truth, and which are not. ![]() In these dark days of “fake news” and “alternative facts,” it’s hard to trust any politicians. ![]() Caption: Image of US flag with “Vote” written on it ( ZIPNON/Pixabay) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Like who? In this version, Mitty’s fantasy life is still strong. On the eve of 2014, we saw Walter Mitty’s reimagined new incarnation starring Ben Stiller and 2013 Kennedy Center Honoree Shirley MacLain. Why? Because we all know a few Walter Mittys, don’t we? Indeed, there’s a little Mitty in all of us, right? Mitty has endured so long he’s become an entry in the dictionary. He’s been with us officially since James Thurber created him in 1939. His fantasy life was, well, much more in every way than his real life.
